Ebike motor cuts out mid-ride — 4-step diagnostic flow

The ebike worked fine for 10 minutes, then power dropped. Maybe it came back, maybe not. This is usually one of four causes — in order of likelihood: battery voltage sag under load, a loose connector shaking apart, motor overheat cutoff, or a hall-sensor fault. Here's how to isolate which.
The problem
Motor cutting out mid-ride is rarely the motor itself. Walking through four diagnostic tests — ideally with a multimeter — isolates the cause in 10 minutes. Save yourself a £120 shop diagnostic.
Quick diagnosis
Most of the time, it's one of these:
- Battery voltage sag under high load — Aged cells can't deliver peak current. Controller sees voltage dip below cutoff, shuts motor off. Power returns when battery recovers.
- Loose motor or controller connector — Vibration works connectors loose. Wheel bumps cause intermittent disconnection. Most common on bikes 2+ years old.
- Motor thermal cutoff — Mid-drives on long climbs overheat. Controller cuts power to protect motor. Ride cools, power returns.
- Hall sensor / phase wire fault — Motor position sensor fails → controller can't commutate → motor stops cleanly. Often after a jet-wash or rain ride.
Fix flow
Step 1 — Battery voltage sag test
- Multimeter on DC V, clipped to battery output pins (or use bike display voltage readout).
- Note resting voltage, then take the bike up a hill or into a headwind at full power.
- If voltage drops more than 5V below resting (e.g. 52V rest → 45V under load), battery cells are aged.
- Fix: either accept reduced usable range, or replace the pack. See replacement batteries.
Step 2 — Connector check
- Inspect every connector on the bike: motor cable (usually enters axle), controller inputs, PAS, throttle, display.
- Disconnect, inspect for corrosion (green/white crust), water, or bent pins.
- Clean with contact cleaner. Apply dielectric grease. Reconnect firmly.
- Tape all connectors with electrical or self-amalgamating tape to lock them against vibration.
- Test ride. Most cut-outs on 2+ year ebikes resolve here.
Step 3 — Thermal cutoff test
- Does the cut-out happen only on long hills or after ~15 minutes of hard use?
- Touch motor casing after cut-out — hot enough to be uncomfortable (60°C+)?
- If yes: motor is hitting thermal cutoff. Options: gear down on climbs (use lower assist, pedal harder yourself), add active cooling (mid-drive riders fit external heatsinks on Bosch/Bafang), or accept it.
- Mid-drive ebikes on steep terrain are most susceptible. Hub motors less so because they radiate heat better.
Step 4 — Hall sensor / phase wire fault
- Motor still cutting but battery fine, connectors clean, not overheating?
- Listen for motor behaviour: does it cut smoothly (controller-initiated) or stutter/buck (hall-sensor problem)?
- A hall fault requires opening the motor — check for water ingress, corroded sensor PCB.
- If you're not comfortable with motor disassembly: take it to a shop with ebike experience. Budget ~£80-150 for hall sensor replacement on hub motors.
- For mid-drives (Bosch, Shimano, Yamaha): not user-serviceable. Shop or warranty replacement only.
