Power on, nothing happens. No display, no LEDs, no motor response. Before you condemn the display, the controller, or the battery, work through this three-step power delivery check. Takes under 10 minutes.
The problem
Power from battery passes through: main connector → controller → display cable → display. Any break in that chain blanks the display. 85% of blank-display cases are cable or connector issues, not dead electronics.
Quick diagnosis
Most of the time, it's one of these:
- Battery not outputting — BMS trip, pack completely dead, or battery power button not pressed fully on. Checked with multimeter in 10 seconds.
- Main battery-to-controller connection loose — Large XT60 / Anderson / proprietary connector at battery mount. Vibration loosens; corrosion builds at contacts.
- Display-to-controller cable damaged — Thin cable running up handlebar stem, easily pinched at stem rotation. Check common failure point.
- Display actually dead — Rare — displays last 10+ years if kept dry. Suspect only after ruling out all above.
Fix flow
Step 1 — Battery power output test
- Multimeter on DC V, 200V range.
- With battery in bike and power button pressed on, probe the main battery output (external contacts at base of mount, or remove battery and test output pins).
- Should read nominal voltage (~42V for 36V, ~54V for 48V, ~58V for 52V at full charge).
- Zero volts: BMS has tripped or pack is dead (see battery won't charge flow).
- Full voltage present → battery is fine. Move to Step 2.
Step 2 — Controller input power test
- Locate the controller (usually in a compartment near the battery mount or inside the downtube).
- Identify the main power input wires (thick red + black, or similar).
- With battery connected and on, probe controller power input.
- Same nominal voltage as battery should be present.
- Zero at controller input but full at battery: broken cable or loose main connector. Trace, clean contacts, reconnect.
- Voltage present at controller input but display still dead: Move to Step 3.
Step 3 — Display cable continuity check
- Display cable is typically 5-6 thin wires in a single jacket, ending in a JST-SM or proprietary connector at the controller.
- Disconnect the display cable from the controller. Inspect pins — bent, corroded, or damaged.
- Multimeter on continuity beep mode. Test each wire from display-end to controller-end — all should beep (continuous).
- Any wire that doesn't beep → broken cable internally. Replace.
- All wires continuous + 5V on the red wire at display end (turn ebike on) = controller is sending power, display is getting power. If display still dead → display itself is faulty.
Replace the display
Generic KT-LCD / Bafang displays are £25–40. Brand-specific (Bosch Purion, Shimano SC-E7000, Yamaha) are £80–200. Display connector must match controller pin layout — take photo of existing connector before ordering.

My display went blank but came back after a power cycle — concerning?
Yes, intermittent blank is worse than permanent — usually a cable partially broken that works sometimes. Find and fix before it fails permanently.
Can moisture cause blank display?
Yes. Water in display cable connector, main power connector, or inside display itself. After wet rides, dry in warm airing cupboard 24hr. Apply dielectric grease on re-assembly.
Do I need the same display brand as controller?
Usually yes. Bafang displays need Bafang controllers (and vice versa). Some third-party displays bridge — check compatibility before ordering.
