A swollen ebike battery is an active fire risk. The casing expands because cells are off-gassing — hydrogen, methane, and electrolyte vapour. It can ignite with no warning. STOP riding immediately, follow the safety steps below, and never attempt to charge or discharge a visibly swollen pack.
The problem
Swelling = thermal runaway pathway is active. Cells fail in sequence, building heat. Fix flow

- If the battery is removable, take it outside to a safe outdoor location (garage with open door, driveway) AWAY from flammable structures.
- Place it on a non-combustible surface (concrete, metal tray) in a ventilated spot.
- Leave it for 24 hours undisturbed. If no heat, smell, or smoke emerges, it's stable for safe transport.
